Super Gloss Q & A
Q: Do I need ventilation while applying Supergloss?
A: Yes. Always observe safety procedures when using Supergloss or
any chemical.
Q: Won't the Supergloss burn if I touch it with the flame from my
propane torch?
A: No. Use a lose flame and keep it moving over the entire surface.
I once stopped moving the torch long enough for the fire to lightly
scorch the wood beneath the layer of Supergloss, but the Supergloss
did not burn even then.
Q: I need to waterproof a darkroom sink. I was thinking about coating
the entire sink in one seamless coating of Supergloss 1/16" thick.
Would the darkroom chemicals react with the Supergloss?
A: Probably not. You could paint the sink white and seal it with clear
Supergloss. Don't forget to plug the drain with a ball of wax.
Q: Can I color Supergloss?
A: In small quantities IASCO RESINAL PIGMENTS have shown compatibility
with Supergloss. Mix color to side "A" then mix "A"&
"B" together in exactly equal amounts.
Q: I'm doing a project in my garage and the temperature might dip
down below 70 F. at night. Is it O.K. to leave a 6 hour old pour overnight,
at these temperatures?
A: No. The first 48 hours of a pour must be kept warm. In fact, the
warmer the better would ensure the plastic maturing into full properties.
For most projects a couple of halogen worklights 20" away will
stave off a chill.
Q: I'm covering a sculpture carved from styrene foam. Will Supergloss
attack it?
A: No. Styrene foam tolerates a coating of Supergloss well. It smoothes
minor imperfections in the surface. Pay close attention to what you're
doing if you use a torch to de-bubble.
Q: I tried to mount a newspaper article to a wooden board using Supergloss.
The paper became transparent and printed through from the other side.
I could not read the printing. Is there a way to fix this?
A: There is no way to fix the project as it stands. On your next attempt,
waterproof your newsprint with a sealer (IASCO SUPRA-SEAL) or you
can use white glue diluted 50% with water. The solution will dry clear
and waterproof, preserving the opacity of the newsprint.
